Declare The Pennies On Your Eyes

4 days and a handful of hours until the extended tax filing deadline is up!!! The company I work for has shut down our physical location for the last 2 weeks and until further notice so I thought this year I might actually be able t.o file my taxes on time. I went by the local IRS office t.o pick up the tax forms and an extension form just in case, but when I got there the doors were locked.

No problem, I'll just get online and download the forms off the internet. Or so I thought. 1O40EZ is nowhere be found. OK, I guess I'll use the 1O40 form. Wow, there's more than one. I sifted through the list and found the one that fit me, printed it out, and commenced t.o deciphering the tax lawyer lingo used on these forms. Capital gain......qualified dividends..... earned income credit..... I double checked just t.o make sure I'd downloaded the "English" version. Apparently I had.

I went back online t.o see if I could find some instructions t.o guide me through this mess. The IRS booklet speaks the sa.me kind of foreign language that's used on the forms. So I went t.o an electronic tax filing site t.o see how they do it. Before I know it I'm halfway through the form and in the corner of the screen I see the dollar amount of my return growing every time I finish another section. The hell with doing it on my own, this plug-n-p.l.a.y tax form is making this a breeze AND it's free! Less than 30 minutes later, my 2019 taxes are filed and I'm $500 richer. T.o celebrate my new found free time I made a big pot of Chicken Tortilla soup.

Do you do your own taxes? Do you like Chicken Tortilla soup?

I have been using the same professional tax preparation service for about fifteen years. The $50 fee is well worth their expertise, electronic filing and my refund from the government is deposited to my bank account within two weeks. No hassle and peace of mind. Seems like a ‘no brainer’. Don’t know if I like Chicken Tortilla Soup as I have never tried it.

Congrats!

I gave up on the paper forms about 10 years ago. Yeah, that would have been the year that my mom died and I inherited her IRA, which took the tax return out of easy territory. Now you’ll be hooked...because next year they’ll carry forward all of your information from this years return and it’ll be even easier.

I've always done my own taxes when I had my business, but I was looking forward to the old 1040 EZ, but nooooooooooooo. I'll never do my own again.

I have a feeling you're right. The days of easy tax returns are over.

When I had my own business for some reason I never made much of a profit. I'm tickled to be getting something back.

Do you do your own taxes? I use one of the tax programs its almost too easy

Do you like Chicken Tortilla soup? Sounds like it has cheese in it so no

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

I do my own taxes, but I use tax preparation software. When I was married I had to pay an accountant to do our taxes because of his job, the software is way cheaper. If I'd known then how easy it is to just plug everything in.... Oh well.

I use either Turbo Tax or Tax Act, whichever one will either do it for free or the cheapest. I've been doing the online taxes for years and since I can do whatever the current version of 1040EZ is, there's no reason for me to pay someone or even buy the software. Just type in the information and it check for errors and omissions, then file electronically and it's done! Having home made Chicken Tortilla soup afterwards would be a definite bonus.

Pagan
Hmmmm....I know I left that wand around here somewhere!

I do my own but it's incredibly complicated... my choices are to learn how to do it myself or pay someone 1k to do it for me.

No chicken tortilla soup. Chicken yes, tortillas yes, soup yes. Not all together tho.

It was so easy. The soup can have cheese in it but I don't like cheese in my soup. It's a tomato based chicken soup and you put pieces of corn tortilla in it until they soften.

I used Efile, it was free and so easy. I hurt myself on that soup, 3 times! Too good!

It's a dark art over here McMc.....and we don't have software that makes it simpler, so you either spend weeks doing your own returns, or pay someone to do it for you. I pay my accountant to do my business and personal tax submissions.......

It's always nice to get something back from the tax man......such a rare occurrence for me.

I think they make it hard just so they can penalize you if you make a mistake.

Now that I can see how the online company did it, I can probably do it next year. I got my money in 11 days.

😂 until the IRS comes out with some new rules/takes away some expiring credits/ deductions, etc.

Re 1040EZ, the IRS under the current Cheeto switches up the 1040 forms. Now, there’s one for “regular” filers and one for seniors: above 65 because they get to claim additional personal exemptions.

Don’t worry. A lot of us accountants also spend time going “what fresh hell is this 😡😡”?

After I buy a house next year I'll be hiring an accountant, I know it's going to be way beyond my comprehension.
