The Country Life
The Country Life Yesterday marked the one month date. One month ago yesterday I spent my first night in the new house..... It's been quite a change. As I was pulling up into my driveway after work last night, I could see the bunny who lives in my backyard hopping around, checking it out to see who was in the driveway before he hopped back in the underbrush and out of sight. I'm a little worried about this guy.... Winter is coming soon, what happens to these little guys when the snow flies? I got out of my car and circled around to the passenger side, I'd picked up a few things after work and had to grab my purse, when I heard some rustling from behind me. Turning, expecting to see Bugs again, I was surprised to see a deer standing back there, looking me over with her head cocked. I certainly wasn't very quiet as I maneuvered into my purse with an arm full of plastic grocery bags to grab my cell phone and snap a pic, but she just stood right there, moving her head around to get a better look at me. I'd venture to guess, this would be one of my late night visitors when I first moved in..... She was still standing there when I headed into the house, depositing my bags on the counter, and writing a note for myself to text my garbage guy about the packing boxes in my shed. Yah, you read that correctly! I went with the local garbage company and you literally text the owner directly with your wants or needs. How crazy is that?? I think that has been the biggest change for me, the fact that everything is done on such a personal level. When the Spawn's bus is running late, I get a text from the bus driver. When I need a container to haul away my packing boxes, I text the garbage guy to see what my options are. When I'm out in my yard and one of the neighbor ladies drive past, they beep and wave Hi. Not going to lie, I'm still getting used to seeing the random bugs from time to time, and the noises that go bump in the night still freak me out until I can figure out where they're coming from, but I'm really glad I made this change. Happy Thursday! |

Only Hares (they have longer ears) turn white to blend in with snow. Shoe show rabbit turn white and brown sometime its their camo to hide. Regular Cotton tails stay brown year round. You could throw out some not a lot veggies carrots, greens, corn or bird seed into the entrance if the hole where every it is. If it eats it there continue if not stop. Don't want any other creters around

It sounds like typical country's living. And it's so much LESS personal than city living. Bunnies burrow underground and stay warm. They usually wait for the landlord to bring them scraps of food. She hasn't texted you yet? 🤔

I'm humming Green Acres now... Very cool that you're enjoying the new surroundings. A change can be good and for you, it looks like it was sorely needed. Hugs

I remember moving just outside of city limits in a wooded area and seeing more bugs and mostly large spiders than I ever had seen before. I stocked up on 20 ft spray Raid.

Country living is OK, as long as the Snakes don't show up

I wish my neighbours were wild animals - they wouldn't complain!

Oh, never thought of the spray.... I don't recall having this many bug issues anywhere else that I've lived. I'm going to check that out this weekend. I'm a little hesitant to feed the animals, partly because I don't want to draw in any bears. Partly because they say it makes the animals dependent upon humans and you will never be able to stop feeding them.

You do know that bunnies have fur coats...right? lol They're pretty hardy little critters, and as Paul said, they burrow underground to stay safe and warm. How great is it to have neighbors waving Hi rather than listening to neighbors scream and yell and wake you at all hours? It's amazing what some peace and quiet can do for a person. Oh...and that personal touch, where you actually deal with a real person rather than an automated system that couldn't care less. Nice! Time to start working on the Christmas card list...

I'd love to live out in the country but I doubt we'd get such personal service? Thankfully, we don't get that many bugs here that are bigger than a hand!

we have bush bunnies here and deer!!!...they survive the cold...Fish & Wildlife tell us "DO NOT" feed them. We live right within the city! [image]

We've had hoof marks from deer right up to the bedroom windows. Little peepers! And we are on the edge of town, but hardly "in the country". LOL I'm glad you are settling in and getting more comfortable with the change. I've never really been a big city person.

your little bunny will do just fine. rabbits are cold weather animals but of course they are other animals that will hunt them also to stay alive. Foxes, coyotes hawks and eagles cars too, they will eat branches and twigs and grass they find

So, wait, you’re saying Bambi and Thumper (or maybe Bambi’s mom) came to visit you? We have jackrabbits that live in the neighbourhood, and while you don’t see them much in winter proper, they’re always back in spring. Don’t worry, they can take care of themselves. A few weeks ago, saw four coyotes roaming the neighbourhood at night, which is more than have ever been seen together before, but the week after, every night when I got home after work, the doe was munching on some grass near the carport. Obviously, the coyotes didn’t find her. We haven’t seen any deer in over a decade, though. Keep in mind that this is all in a slightly more wooded area of a city with about a half-million residents. I predict in a couple more months, you will be really chill, bein’ all country ‘n stuff.

Ms. secret_lade, Glad to see that you are adapting to life in the country. It is more peaceful than the city. One thing you need to remember is all those critters you see, they have been living outdoors without human help for ages. They know how to survive winter when the snow flies, and please do not feed them. When you feed them they become dependent on humans for food and could seek out others that want to do them harm. Enjoy the country life as there is nothing else like it.
