Houston Drag 1936
Houston Drag 1936 I'm pleased to say I received my 2nd injection today. So I hope to provide a fun story next month. For now, here is a little Houston history. Located at Airline Road at Little York in Houston, The Wagon Wheel was a female impersonation club that opened in 1936. Back then, Airline was the Dallas-Houston highway. Entertainers consisted of both male and female performers. It was advertised as a "A Unique Rendezvous For Stay - Uppers" and featured Pete Van and his Play Boy Band. Three floor shows were held nightly and was managed by Dave Beckerman, former manager of the Club Casanova. In 1937, The Houstonian reported that since there are no night clubs with floor shows left in Houston, the Wagon Wheel has been playing to capacity crowds. A fire destroyed the club in 1938, which was suspected to be arson. Rice University |
