First off the guy was an idiot. From my opinion when meeting people in general I never expect anything physical to happen. But I understand the frustration. However, to answer your question... no rules are definitely required for any kind of real life vs online meeting. Even if you were to look at meeting people in every day to day life we have rules or social mores and norms that we follow without thinking about it. (IE: personal space, just as an example.) Now in regards to the coffee shop, I would not worry about avoiding it, Even if said person were to frequent there, from the way he acted the staff would have him escorted off the premise.

Don't take what happened at the meeting personally, or as a measure of your making a faulty evaluation of the person or the circumstances. It sounds like the person was being intentionally obnoxious, in a revengeful sort of way, just to upset/embarrass you. Maybe as a way to get back power over you/the situation, by ruining the scene just like you 'ruined' his hopes. This reminds me of an experience I had years ago, with someone from a mainstream dating site. Although it was obvious during our coffee meet that we didn't have a sufficient connection to lead to something further (that is, a second meet), the guy, knowing full well that there is a very slim-to-none chance of getting a yes, suggested we visit the ladies' room so that he could 'feel me up.' I don't think he actually wanted that, it came off more like intentional meanness, a form of verbal humiliation. Something I recognized as a pattern of behavior when reading about Harvey Weinstein's mockery of women when they rejected his advances. In spite of the no's he would become more crude and verbally cruel, or, more likely, precisely because of the no's.

Just glancing through the comments i didn't see anything that if you say "No " it means No and he was wrong in the eyes of the law ! Your rules are just fine as you need to stay safe as it is your body and soul, And he agreed to them by accepting the date !

Sorry he tried to manipulate you on your first attempt at branching out. A meet and greet at a public place to get acquainted is the safest way to determine chemistry. You are worth waiting for.
