Things You Should Do Occasionally

I have worked with computers in some form since I was in high school, which may not seem that strange except that I was in high school over thirty years ago. Back then it was all about punch cards and magnetic tape. A lot has changed since then.

One thing hasn't changed, and that is the need to back up your data. Doing backups is always a tedious process, though as a friend reminded me, it goes a lot easier with cocktails. I recently had a hard drive fail on this computer, and I was fortunate that I anticipated the problem and backed up all of my files. No data lost, and to be honest, the computer is a lot faster now.

But I am not writing this to convince you that you should backup your computer. The other day, while CityHookups.com was sputtering and struggling with their database issues, I started to feel a little squeamish about the safety of my blog. Of course, there's no way for one to ask CityHookups.com to back up your blogs - presumably they do that for you, but as so many will attest, the integrity of the CityHookups.com databases is so fleeting.

I decided to take things into my own hands.

I opened a word document, and started cutting and pasting my blog into it. I only saved the parts I wrote - I didn't save the comments... not that they're not important, but it would be an order of magnitude (or two) more work to save them, too.

I discovered a couple things in the process:

  • My postings have gotten longer over time (I must have more to say). Hey! No smart-assed comments!

  • There is some pretty funny stuff in there.

  • My 375 blog postings turned out to be 240 single-spaced pages. In contrast, my Masters thesis was 107 double-spaced pages.

  • Here's the nice thing... Not that I am thinking about writing a book... but now, I have all of my (CityHookups.com) writing in one place that I have control over.

If you're halfway serious about blogging and writing, and you've spent some time pouring your heart out on these perverted pages, do yourself a favor. Back up your blogs. That way, the next time you log into CityHookups.com and your splash page says you have no emails, no friends, no points and no blogs, at least you know that all that hard work you put into your blog isn't lost forever.

yep saving what u want (post or comments) is always a good plan....assuming you have the back ups on ur computer too going. I almost killled my future ex when he did ?? and the whole computer went ?? (it was actually Windows that went ?). Ending up having to remove the harddrive, made it like an external harddrive, got the info off that way (thankfully for him since a lot of my info wasn't "backed up" elsewhere) and reput the harddrive in and reformmated it to get Windows back up and running.

very good points....me and a friend was just talking about something related, i posted about it earlier today under my NY resolutions post. Not only back up ur stuff...back up ur friends you wanna stay in touch with if you haven't already in case the site goes south too.

I got ur L. Thanks. Hope to and plan to answer it before the weekend is over.

Once upon a time I did the same thing with a 'blogspot' blog. For some reason I have NOT done the same here.
    Hmmm.
    I appreciate the advice!
    Happy new Year!

    I think a few will...

The funny thing is... I haven't written anything new since I posted this... and did the backup... So I should start writing, and make the backup obsolete.

Interestingly, I have two other blogs, and I have backed those up, too... though those are on a real blogging platform, so I have the entire blog database, with all the comments, etc.

Thanks for visiting, and have fun with the backup!

Alright. Color me (almost) 'officially' backed up, now! In a word doc, just need to put on a thumb drive.
    Great advice!!
    Thank you!!!
