Okay. Sunday is Ella's First birthday bash. YAY!

First off, I'm a bit drunk at the moment. Last night I found this really interesting bottle of wine made in Maipo, Chile by Baron Philippe de Rothschild. I was impressed. It was only nine bucks. I yanked the cork when I got home, poured a glass and took a sip. It was glorious! And then it closed up into this really, vile swill that I was barely able to drink another glass of... But I had faith in The Baron and knew he was up to more than just siring illegitinmate while on Holiday in Chile. So tonight the smoked porkchops and the cabbage with fennel seed hit the skillet, and I pulled the cork to find out what The Baron had really been up to. Wow! What a difference leting it breath for a day made- like drinking cold coffee, chocolate milk and grape juice at the same time. WOW!! I know it sounds nasty...but I can't stop drinking it.
I think they put some SLURM Cola in it for body.

But anyway, so the little nipper is turning Uno on Sunday!! I've been freaking out about this for almost a year now. Why? Because all of her neighbors are Yuppies, childless Yuppies, lonely childless Yuppies. And she has everything in triplicate or sterling silver. Seriously. There's nothing I could show up with that she doesn't already have.

What's that you say? An Uncle, she doesn't have an uncle until you show up... She has countless uncles, Yuppie Uncles...

But I planned for this moment years and years ago. When Sis and I were growing up, our favorite book was the Dr. Seuss, Sleep Book. And it just so happens that I happen to be in possession of said book. A book that everyone has believed missing for many, many years now. My secret trump card should this moment ever arise.

Maybe I should feel bad about keeping it a secret; but more than a secret, I've been keeping it in trust for a worthy, young imagination to drift away with its wonders opening the doors to dreams both awake and asleep. Sorry. Like I said, I'm a bit too drunk at the moment to express this properly. But It is THE ultimate bedtime story book!

My question is, should I include some money to establish a bedtime story library for Ella along with the Dr. Seuss book, or should I let the return of this Icon from out past stand on its own?

Sis is gonna be amazed and touched, and then she's gonna be pissed. And everyone else is gonna be totally confused and materialistically disoriented, and quite possibly stunned...

I dunno. I'm buzzing with the Baron.

Ah, Baron Philippe de Rothschild: It's Highly Addictive!

It is frustrating competing with a horde of yuppies, but you can give wee Ella the one thing they can't: poverty. No, wait! Love! I meant, authentic love!

Honestly, resurfacing that long-lost Seuss book is so wonderfully marvelous. I think you are the best uncle in the whole world, & Ella is a lucky little niece. Happy one year under the diaper to her.

Of course, these parties are more for the loved ones than the baby--most of the time the poor rugrats get overwhelmed and cry alot.

Funny you are drinking the Baron- I myself uncorked a bottle of his Pinot Noir a couple nights ago-- I was less than impressed, but perhaps I should give it another shot.

Guess I will have to look for that book, to add to my kiddo's library.

In ten or twenty years she will not remember the party or any Benjamins hidden in books. She will always remember something from Theodor Seuss Geisel. Get out your language needles and knit her a nice dedication on the inside front cover. Something about dreams, awake and asleep that she can find when she's 24 and accidentally make her week.

Cash, my friend, is for unimaginative chumps.

The book, her Uncle, and a vow to read it to her more times than she can count, will be wonderful.

PS: My childhood bff couldn't wait until my kid was born so she could give him his own copy of Green Eggs and Ham.

Yeah, I'm still [blog 1hotwahine]

One year old children barely know what to do with more than 2-3 presents. She will have no idea whatsoever what to do with your cash. Make her a card that tells her how special she is and alludes to the unique nature of your gift and attempt to give it to her in an environment where she doesn't have 20 different audience members and a stack of presents a mile high. The great thing about one year old children is that they value the time and attention paid them in the form of a special story just about more than anything else.

I say: Give her the book and a bottle of wine for laters. You know, one that will age nicely. Just like her uncle.

(Burp. G2 doesn't do sentimental. It makes her nervous.)

awwwwww... i have the same relationship to 'Oh, the Places You'll Go!'

My own original copy went to thing1 on her 1st birthday and a store purchased one to thing2 on hers.

just the book would be wonderful. then maybe inspire one of the yuppies to pony up the $1,255.95 for the Seuss inspired 'Cartoon Furniture' bookcase to go with it! (google 'Cartoon Furniture' and take a look...the stuff is pricey as hell... but COO

A book is the best gift you can give a child. Long before I knew what the little words meant I used to pour over the illustrations in some of my books for hours upon hours...I'd submerse myself in that world and longed for the day I could read the words myself and...well...look how I turned out. Yeah, look how I turned out. On second thought, you should also provide a twenny spot to go along with that book...yanno, just to be safe.

My favorite book, with the inscription from Auntie D is still on my book shelf, where it became a favorite of the mini freshes as well.

I must say you are showing remarkable restraint as an uncle. My previously unmarried brothers gave the mini freshes NOISY toys. I vowed revenge. Unfortunately, their wives did nothing to deserve the forthcoming drum sets.

I know, I'll give the wives WINE. Any recommendations?

Hey! Thanks everyone for the support. All this Unkie stuff is new to me, so I really am grateful for the feedback.

I decided to get a non-birthday card with a picture of a cat on the front that said, "Ate, Pooped, Napped", and inside it said, "So what's new with you?". Then I wrote about my cat wondering what all the excitement was about, and I explained what birthdays are and why they are exciting. I stuck a gift card to Barnes and Noble in it for more bedtime literature.

I liked the idea of the inscription, but after a bit of research...the date in the book says 1963...it might be a first edition.

So I wrote on the card:

I stole this here book,
and hid it away.
And I was waiting,
for this special day.

You see? It was ours,
That's your Mom and Me.
Our Mom would read it,
when we got sleepy.

It was our most loved,
a book held so dear.
It's certainly yours,
now you're snoozin' here!

Zzzzzzzzzzzzz

It was a big hit! And Sis already had a new copy of it ready to go. Somehow she also found a new copy of Richard Scarry's, The Great Pie Robbery and Other Mysteries. I had forgotten all about that one...how could I have forgotten? I loved that book!!

A great day was enjoyed by all!

.

I'm standard now, so I'll have to chunk all my replies together like I used to...don't worry, not as bad as it sounds. I'll try to get caught up here...hopefully soon.

Very charming.

Another very cool, but out of print book is Pomando. She will need to be a little older, and it really is worth finding. It's about an artist who paints the world as he sees it rather than how it is. The village is not happy that he paints so inaccurately, until one day the princess decides to try to be like his paintings. Little by little, their world began to be filled with beauty. Everyone praised Pomando for finally learning how to paint.

The world WILL rise to our level of expectation. A lesson worth learning very young.

Can't go wrong with Seuss. An aunt gave us a subscription to the Dr. Seuss book club when we were little. I still remember some of those books start to finish!

Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale
Her infinite variety. Other women cloy
The appetites they feed, but she makes hungry
Where most she satisfies. For vilest things
Become themselves in her, that the holy priests
Bless her when she is riggish. ~~ from Antony & Cleopatra
