Are You a Shoe Hoarder?

Are You a Shoe Hoarder?

The other day I came across a survey reporting that the average American man owns 12 pairs of shoes, while the average American woman owns a whopping 27 pairs. That would make the national average about 19 pairs per person. Wow! Seriously?

Well, this statistic surely does not describe me. I've never considered myself a "shoe person" or fashionista. I don't even like shopping very much. After giving it some thought I guessed that I had maybe fifteen pairs of shoes. To prove it, I counted all my shoes — and took these photos.

Grand total: I own 22 pairs of shoes. I couldn't believe it. 22 pairs! 10 of which I use exclusively for running.

The worst part is, out of the 22 pairs I only wear five to six of them on a regular basis. The others I wear maybe once or twice a year. I found a couple pairs that I haven't worn since college. Sigh.

How did this happen? How did I end up with two identical pairs of sandals (umm... for back up?) and a pair of virtually unused sneakers that I've held on to for 10 years (dang, I'm getting old)? This is pretty wasteful — not just because of money spent and natural resources consumed, but because I'm underutilizing perfectly good pairs of shoes that someone else could appreciate.

Millions of people around the world have no shoes at all while the average American has nearly 20 pairs each. What's going on here?

It's time for a Stuff Check. I've decided to clean out my closet and give away my excess shoes. How about you? Sometimes we don't know how much stuff we have until we pull them out and take a look.

How many shoes do you own? Post a photo of your shoes as a reply and let us judge you!

About 30, and a dozen I wear regularly. I started playing a game by saying if I bring home a pair of shoes, another pair has to leave.

I own many, many pairs of shoes. I wear them on a regular basis. The idea being that they will last me a long time. I 'm still on the one pair a month spree and now it's time to start looking at some different boots until I get bored with that.

This is a great topic and you have taken the noble road with it. I'm proud of you, myelin36.

I have about a nineteen pairs, depending on how you count the specialized footwear. My eleven specialized pairs are: heavy galoshes, light galoshes, cleated bicycling shoes, spelunking books, snow boots, waders, house slippers, ski boots, sandals, and the extra pairs of gym shoes and dress shoes I keep in my locker. Do those count against the total? I might do without the light galoshes, but the rest perform essential functions.

Eliminate the specialized shoes and I have eight pairs of dress, casual, and athletic shoes in my closet. I could probably do without two of those, but they are in poor condition and no one would want them.

Well, I'm not ashamed to say that I own over 50 pairs of shoes and just under 10 pairs of boots. Except for 3 very dressy pairs of shoes, I wear all of them regularly. The 3 very dressy go with formal dresses and worn about 3-4 times a year.

So, yes, I am a shoe-junkie. I love shoes, and consider shoes shopping the best kind of therapy: it's cheaper than a shrink and produces results.

I went to work in Alaska last Summer and managed to get rid of everything I owned except what I could bring in two big duffel bags and one box that I sent to my sister. It was like you said. I didn't think I had a lot of stuff until I actually started going through it and getting rid of things.

I've been careful not to get too many things since then. I came back with one pair of shoes and now I have five. It was some extreme downsizing but it taught me that getting rid of literal baggage gave you the same good feeling as getting rid of emotional baggage.

Ten for running? I can think of three specific needs for different running shoes! Wow!

Got to have different running shoes to match different types of outfits and different types of runs (long run vs. short run, tempo (fast) run etc.) Some shoes afford more impact protection than others.

Much as I hate to admit it, I wind up putting many women to shame in the shoe department. While I won't post an actual number, as a benchmark, I will share that I've got 6 pairs of black dress shoes. That doesn't count the several retirees that live in boxes and reside in my spare bedroom closet.

Yes, I'm a bit of a shoe whore for a guy but I appreciate finer clothing and that means having the right shoes to accompany.

A dear, dear, friend, ex-local, and my blogging mentor was a self confessed “shoe-whore” Finally her boyfriend/come husband/Dom told her she couldn't add ANY more shoes (unless she threw a pair out – no man would be so silly at to give her a definitive ultimatum.) She blogged about that (of course!!) so I printed out the blog, then invited her to visit this “cool new shoe store I noticed”. Once she found the right pair, I waved the blog post before her.

She used to say men have only 3 pairs of shoes: black dress, brown dress, sneakers. HAA! I ALSO have boat shoes – a product of my Florida days I reckon.

I just got up and counted...28. That includes boots, sneakers, sandals, flips, slippers, Uggs (they get their own classification), work shoes (which at this point are almost exclusively fancy nurses clogs - thank god I work in Healthcare and these are considered acceptable). A few in each category...some that get worn rarely, some that get work often.

I'm in that whole spring clean-out mode too...I got rid of half my clothes (too big and I refuse to backslide with the weight I've lost). And when I did that, I also got rid of shoes - work shoes that I don't wear, that aren't comfortable (maybe 5 pairs went in the bag).

I do tend to operate under the theory if I bring something new in, I need to let something go. Well, except for art.

I have 3 pair, Work boots, work shoes and riding boots that double as dress up footwear. I know a few men that own more shoes the most women.

Wow! I had seen this post just a few hours ago maybe. Or even maybe yesterday.

Now! I was going to do a post : What makes "the shoe" right for women?

I should own more than the four or five pairs I have, but loath shoe shopping.

What makes you purchase a particular shoe over the others you try on? color? heel? utility? Price? Oh I get it - probably matches something?

I am not trying to be funny. I am really curious.

Various factors go into a shoe purchase. Mostly if it's for work, I stick with a practical black, brown or grey shoe with a respectable 2" heel. I have four pairs of black stilettos that I wear exclusively for sexy dates which I deem my "fuck me heels." My real attention foes into running shoes which I spend the most money on. I am very particular about fit. I tend to go for stability although I must admit a couple of my running shoes were a splurge because they looked sexy. How about you?

Since I do not go out at all, I stick with leather -usually brown, to wear trucking.
A similar pair kept clean for going to town. A new black pair in closet for funerals and weddings to match my dress clothes.

In the market for a running style shoe to use on treadmill. Since I do not want attention to me when I am in public, the color will not be bright. Just a running shoe. The fit will be snug enough. Since I am on a budget for everything these days I'll spend less than $70.00 on them.

I am in a frugal mode since the income at our house has been cut by 50% due to my spouses stroke. So, many things still go on the want list. But, I am going to put a refurbished treadmill for our healthy list.

Selling some man toys to buy that for us to use.
