Confessions Of A Groupie

Thats right, I used to be a groupie of sorts. Yesterday I responded to a question and went on and on about the book I was reading and my band of obesession. It got me thinking about my past.

In my teens and early 20's I used to be a rocker girl. When I was very young my parents enrolled me in guitar lessons, classical to be exact, and as I got older I gravitated towards rock n' roll. To suppliment the entire fantasy, my best friend Jewel and I used to go to all the shows back in the 80's and hang out in the hotels we thought they the bands were staying. Needless to say we got lucky many times, hitting the right hotel and getting autographs and that was enough for us.

In my late teens I heard a band on the radio, Guns N' Roses and thought my life had changed. It was everything and a bag of chips. I went to purchase the cassette (yes, cassette) and wore out many copies in my walkman and ghettoblaster....those where the days! At that time i was in University, dancing for extra cash and had freedoms I never had before. My obsession and my friend in tow helped me follow around the band whenever I could. Toronto, Vancouver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Tampa, Kansas City....whenever we could get a ticket and we had the cash for a flight we were there! It was exciting and thought of sleeping with the band was never my intention. The goal was to see them and hear them and that was enough for me. Jewel was different than me, she wanted to do the entire band and many a nights I remember her sleeping with men you were sure were going to make you itchy the next day just to get backstage. Lucky enough we met the band a few times and even had a drink or 2 with them. Mind you, they were so loaded I don't think they noticed we were there.

Twenty two years later it is the same for me. I love this band and even though I don't follow them around anymore to see a show as I think I may be too old for that, and life doesn't allow for it anymore, I still saw them 3 years ago or at least a skeleton version of the original band, I am reading Slash's autobiography, and if you check out my ipod or stereo there is Guns on the menu. And in the morning I'll be wrapped up in my Guns blanket drinking coffee out of my Guns mug...ohh yes, I have it bad.

Have you ever listened to something and it made you feel differently from the inside out? That is what Guns does for me, that is what the sound of a guitar does for me.

I really dug into the archives to find a pic of me in my 20's with my Guns t-shirt. It looked good as a headscarf also.

Thats what turns me on then and now. I sometimes wonder what bands make in impression so deep on others that after many years they still listen to them.

We are all the same...we all need an escape of music, the difference lies in who we listen to.

MY favorite: PETER GABRIEL

1987 Arena di Verona...

lui che si tuffa nel publico urlante nel brano:

"Lay your hands on me"...

io sotto con loro a strappare un pezzo del suo
vestito...

lui che torna sul palco con gli occhi pieni di adrenalina..

A good day..

I listen to Bob Dylan because of a tough period a few years ago, when I discovered his music it made an immediate impression on me.

Other types of music and singers I go back to, and away from, but Dylan is one I always listen to.

Hi Bella, I had a very over protective childhood, sigh...didn't experience many things, even the joy of listening to music in my day. I was a serious student and wanted to please and obey my parents....I know silly, eh? LOL

I wonder what I would have done if I had the freedom to explore things? Would I be the same person as I am today? No regrets however....the only thing I would change is not marrying my Ex....who was very abusive and domineering....

Now I live life in awe with my freedom and loving and doing the things I want to do....

Happy Valentine's Darlin'!!!

TASTE LIFE IN ALL IT'S FLAVOUR

A lot of bands I listen to inspire certain aspects of me.

My wife has me listening to a lot of country, which I don't like, coz a lot of it advocates alcoholism, something I have a huge issue with. I'm a metal man, myself.

Growing up, I watched MTV, and saw the videos by Motley Crue, G N R, and I used to be into . I liked Public Enemy. But was drawn more to rock after seeing that pop radio was more of the same.

In the 90s, when I first discovered metal, I was into Metallica, Suicidal Tendencies, and Queensryche. I then moved on to Megadeth, AC/DC, and Judas Priest. Priest's "Painkiller" was an awesome song, and it screamed metal, literally. I then moved onto grunge, with Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, and Nirvana, but I found myself wanting something heavier. Grunge was ok, but not heavy enough. That's when I discovered Gwar!

The 90s seemed like a dry spell as far as metal was concerned. MTV cancelled the Headbangers Ball, and shows that had heavy music the followed were quickly given the axe. Which meant that I had to rely on my natural curiosity to find what I craved. I bought "The Graveyard" by King Diamond, and it blew me away, despite it not being one of King's stronger releases. I became a fan that day. I bought a Judas Priest Tribute album, and it had bands that I still listen to on there, including Strapping Young Lad, Mercyful Fate, and Iced Earth. I also bought albums by Six Feet Under, Cannibal Corpse, and Morbid Angel, not knowing what darkness awaited me in months to come.

I ventured into black metal, bands like Mayhem, Emperor, Immortal, Cradle Of Filth, and Dimmu Borgir. My soul was dark then, just like my music. But just as my curisoity led me to black and death metal, it also brought me to more melodic and symphonic bands like Nightwish, Epica, Sirenia, Tristania, The Gathering, and Lacuna Coil. I had also gotten into Arch Enemy, Light This City, Dethklok, and Deicide. Plus, there are those classic bands like Motorhead, Testament, and Helloween.

My wife might try to turn me country, but I'm fueled by metal.

Come into my realm! You aren't afraid...are you?

Are you sure we did not meet in the 80's?? LOL
I was THE Motley Crue groupie girl and went to many cities to see them (have seen them in concert 27 times now) and still love them. I will always think Nikki is God.
G&R was not as good to me, but Duff was my guy. Think it is a bass player thing.

My late husband was in a rock band, my first love was a bass player in a band that was very popular in those days, and most of my friends even now are musicians.
I think we were separated at birth girl!

I would say more songs than one specific band.... and memories of specific nights or occasions... Krptonite by 3 doors down gets me going... and a couple other.

Being somewhat of a musician, I love all genres of music. I am quite fond of the blues. Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam , The Hip and Matchbox 20 are a few of my favorites also.

Strangely enough its a paticular TV program that really gets me going !! Murder She Wrote........ God the woman from that show give me a wood everytime

Have a very Happy Valentines Day Bella ,

Micky

You are sooo right Mysterious . That acoustic version is a classic. Great vocals. That is one of my favorite songs to play when I get together with my jamming buddies . I do have to hit myself in the balls to reach those high notes, but it is worth it

Well I was never a groupie, but I always loved KISS. My cousin went to see them in 1978, and since then I have always wanted to see them. Well my wish came true. When they were last here for their final tour, I told my wife, "I don't know about you, but I'm going." Of course she came with me and that show was the best I ever saw.

Long live rock 'n' roll.
Rikki

Wow, you are really into heavy stuff. I am not familiar with most of what you mentioned but now and again after reading your blog I find myself downloading things I never heard just to get a feel for it. Thanks for that...
